December 2020

Merry Christmas to our loyal supporters!

I want to take this moment to thank you all for your generosity, encouragement and support of our home. Without you and your regular donations, advocating for these beautiful children would not be possible. Being able to give them love, a warm meal, a happy home and an education is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

When I see how afflicted a poor nation like Nepal is coping in this pandemic, I am grateful that our Fireflies are safe and sound in our home on the hill.  The most recent Covid update sees 25,000 infected, 226,000 recovered and 1600 deaths. School reopened for the younger Fireflies on 10 December, having spent 8 months in lockdown. Our older children continue to learn online. Still, the nation is in partial lockdown using alternate travel days and restricted business hours to help curb the spread of the virus. Our hardworking and selfless director Indira is out there feeding 700 homeless people a day, with the help of locally donated produce and volunteers. It is so wonderful for our Fireflies to see the importance of helping others in need.

It has been an interesting year for our Fireflies with days spent helping in the garden, playing, crafting, cooking, reading and exercising. Our staff who live onsite have been absolute troopers keeping the children stimulated and in a routine. Run off their feet, they have done a magnificent job. I cannot praise them enough!

For those not on social media, our updates have included videos and photos of daily life at Firefly home including the wonderful day of celebrations for Dasain and Tihar festivals. The children made beautiful cards for house dad Sagar on Father’s Day who felt very honoured with the special meal they prepared for him and the hugs he received.

This year we have not been able to hold fundraisers as we usually do, however our collaboration with Aide Nepal Magnoac and Kiwianis Club Nepal has been positive. These organisations have recognised our great work and donated supplies to help care for our Fireflies. We also managed to squeeze in a successful yoga day fundraiser in NZ. Thank you to all of you who supported and donated.

Next year we have plans for a family fun run fundraiser, an evening market event, another yoga day and a brunch. All these events will be advertised on our website and social media pages. Fundraising ideas are always welcome. Get in touch with me if you’re keen.

If you have any questions about our home or your sponsored child, feel free to email me. I am so thankful you have chosen Firefly as your charity to support. The team and I will continue to shower our Fireflies with love, give them hope and support them as they move through their special childhood years. As promised, I will continue to send 100% of your donations to the children.

From the team at Firefly, have a very merry Christmas and here’s wishing 2021 brings some peace to you all.
