Kalpana
Her Story:
Kalpana was born in 1996. Her father left the family years ago, leaving the mother no option but to send Kalpana to work, cleaning houses in the city from dawn ’til dusk until she was rescued by FCH.
Kalpana’s older sister (Punam) and their two brothers, Sujan and Kasmir, are also part of the FCH family. Their eldest brother is sadly a street kid resorting to drugs. Her mother, Mangali, is sponsored by FCH following an accident in 2008 that left her badly injured with huge medical bills and unable to work. She lives around the corner from our home, so Kalpana visits her mum often.
Her personality:
Kalpana is very affectionate and sensitive. She is very responsible – she looks after the younger children well and also helps didis and aunties in the kitchen. She has a great smile that hardly anyone can resist. She always listens attentively whenever spoken to. She loves dancing and is not afraid to choreograph a show for visitors when they come to the home.
Udpate
Kalpana loved meeting one of her sponsors, Jayne Millar, last month. Kalpana welcomed Jayne with lots of smiles, talking, hugs and affection. Together they made cotton bracelets, ate together and spent quality time with each other. Jayne spent 8 days with Kalpana at the orphanage getting to know her and how the home operates. She also met with Kalpana’s mother. Jayne’s report of her visit will be posted on the website soon under testimonials of sponsors. Kalpana and her sister Punam will sleep at their mum’s room nearby from now on. They will return to eat, wash clothes, help out around the home and mix with the Firfly family. They will live with their mum so they can help look after her and gain a little more social independance away from the institution of a children’s home. They are both happy with this decision as is their mother.
Sponsorship:
Kalpana is partly sponsored by Christina Piet, Becs Annan, Claire Wadey and Jayne Millar – all from NZ.
